A Brief of Beijing Information Science and Technology University
Ratified by the Ministry of Education in May 2004, Beijing Information Science & Technology University (BISTU) is a school of higher education and a merger in founding process of Beijing Institute of Machinery and Beijing Information Technology Institute. The university takes engineering as its main faculty combined with management, liberal and science programs.
The university comprises two schools, one division and about 20 departments, they are: School of Business; School of Continuing Education; Postgraduate Division; Department of Mechanical Engineering; Department of Electronic Information Engineering; Department of Computer and Automation; Department of Information Technology and Communication Engineering; Department of Computer Information System and Department of Economic Trade etc.
The university now offers 19 Master programs and 30 Bachelor degree programs. Recently, the university has total number of 17,000 students, including undergraduates and postgraduates.
The university occupies 500 mu of land (33.3 hectares), another 1000 mu will be claimed for building the new campus. The present school building is about 320,000 sq.m. The library contains 623,000 books. There are now 23 labs, such as Computer center, Audio & Video Center, Mechanical & Electrical Practice Center, Network Center. There are also Research Centers of Mechanical & Electrical Technology, Mechanical Design and CAD, Precision Measurement and Instrument, Electric Detecting Technology, Optical and Holographic Control and Higher Education. Besides, the university has facilities of standard plastic sport ground, gymnasium and students’ activity center.
The present total faculty number is 1600, among them specialty teachers are near 800, with titles of full and associate professors numbered 400.
The university pays great importance in scientific research, possesses a number of research and development structures including some key labs of Beijing Municipal Government, assumes and completes a batch of important research projects belonging to national, local and national defenses requirement. After several years’ construction and development, the university has been concentrating its efforts in the research of Optical-mechatronics, information and computer technology, knowledge management and technology economics, and has achieved distinct features and advantages in the following research areas: In the fields of the theory, technology and the application of sensor, such as analog voltage level sensor, space posture intelligent control sensor have been applied in the field of national defense and war industry, the economic benefit is remarkable. A batch of advanced research projects have also been accomplished in the areas of the theory and application of fault trend prediction for large rotary equipment, the measuring techniques for large size parts and curved faces, the detection techniques for high-frequency quartz crystal, computer virtual reality and digital simulation technology, etc. The university has been proceeding in the domestic advanced levels in information safety, data excavating, large-size text recalls, also in the areas of scientific management, the research of experimental economics, in the areas of knowledge management and quantitative economics researches.
The university has established academic relationships and cooperation with universities of the United States, Japan, Ireland, United Kingdom, Germany and Australia in research programs, visits and lecturing, jointly training graduate students and bachelor students, and students exchange programs. The university also recruits a number of foreign experts to assume research or teaching work.
